Cottage Insurance

How to approach Cottage Insurance

  • Commonly, a cottage will be insured as a “Seasonal” location and coverage will usually be restricted to “Fire and Extended Coverage” only.
  • This can allow you to pay only one liability premium and you may be able to split the contents between both locations. However, the insurer may not allow this if the property is only visited a few months during the year.
  • The best approach – list the cottage on your Home insurance policy as a “Secondary” location.
  • Among other issues will be: Not within 8 km of a fire hall, Not permanently occupied, Water access only, Road not maintained year round.

How to reduce your cottage insurance?

  • Make sure you are receiving all the discounts you are entitled to including mature citizen, non-smoker and claim free.
  • Insure your cottage with the same company that insures your home and auto to qualify for a multi-policy discount.
  • Increase your deductible to $1,000.

North City Stories

Having been with North City now for more than 8 years I have to say I was feeling pretty comfortable dealing with them. Their response time has always been excellent, and changes to my policies were always handled in a professional and competent manner. A great company to deal with.
